This snug Theater District wine bar from the restaurant group behind such dependable Italians as Puttanesca and Il Bastardo transcends the typical crostini, salumi, and cheese. Sturdy wood-shutter tables, straw-seated chairs, and beamed walls anchor the one-room space, which also boasts a spot for communal dining. The expert kitchen finesses Italian comfort classics like succulent meatballs in white wine and a bountiful fritti of calamari, zucchini and shrimp with just the right amount of batter, salt and oil. Meze maniche—literally “short sleeves”—are wee rigatoni in a bright tomato sauce with buffalo mozzarella and prosciutto, while tender, braised short ribs dress incredibly light gnocchi. Desserts are just as delicious: A strawberry-spin on “tiramisu” sneaks fresh berries between fluffy layers of mascarpone cream and ladyfinger crumble. A list of 150 wines keeps theater-goers and post-work locals busy at the white stone bar, but with satisfying portions averaging $12, the food here is one of the area’s best deals since TKTS.

Named for the gritty, industrial port city, this Hell’s Kitchen kitchen imbues the Film Center Building with a Casablanca -era French-Moroccan feel, replete with tile floor and zinc bar, but no piano. Chef Andy D’Amico maintains the Mediterranean flavor with dishes like the moroccan chicken, moules Provencale, and the inevitable bouillabaisse.

Vice Versa

Next to the checkerboard tattiness of the neighboring bistros, the clean, modern lines of ViceVersa are so unprepossessing it’s easy to walk right by its storefront. Do so, and you’ll be missing out on one of the most congenial and gratifying restaurants in the theater district, as well as one that’s become a whispered neighborhood favorite. Like a hit play that opened with little fanfare, Vice Versa is full of diverting surprises, not least of which is its signature dish: casoncelli alla bergamasca-little ravioli stuffed with veal, raisins, and amaretto cookies, served with sage butter and pancetta. It’s a mouthful, all right. In fact, a particularly and unexpectedly tasty one. But one that shouldn’t keep you from the “strangled priest” pasta or the lobster salad with balsamic vinegar and thyme.

The 5 Napkin Burger is 10 ounces of fresh ground chuck topped with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and a rosemary aioli. In addition to the house burger, the menu features six other burgers: cheddar bacon, Italian turkey, lamb kofta burger, veggie burger, inside out burger and a burger salad.

At its core, 5 Napkin Burger is a great neighborhood restaurant. We have rounded out the burger section of the menu with a broad array of dishes that appeal to anyone in any group. Our menu offers hand-crafted sushi, appetizer and entree salads and a full selection of entrees.

The 5 Napkin menu has a lot to offer. The hardest question might be what to drink with your meal. Guests can choose from 50 beers, 100 wines and 10 specialty cocktails. Our atmosphere is casual and fun, so whatever you choose to eat or drink, be ready to enjoy yourself.

Hell’s Kitchen (I’ve been here – yummy Mexican!)

Fresh, flavorful cuisine with a seasonal bent draws crowds to this Mexican-fusion sleeper in Hell’s Kitchen. A glass wall looks onto an unexpectedly picturesque slice of Ninth Avenue, and streams light into the warm, casual dining room where vintage travel posters adorn exposed-brick and bright, maize-colored walls. It’s a lively space, with tables and taupe banquettes shoved together (a bit too closely) and a tiled bar running the room’s length. But judging by the crowds, no one minds squeezing in, especially when the fare is this consistently satisfying and beautifully presented. During the summer months, the chef likes to experiment with the smoky flavors associated with grilling, layering it with varying intensities of heat and a bounty of market produce. Kernels of corn sweetly dot the creamy tang of an artichoke quesadilla, while a silky, coconut flan with chewy macaroons and a tropical compote of blueberries, mango, and kiwi is simply sinful. Accordingly, the menu warms up in the winter, with substantial dishes like a satisfying pork stew sopped up by starchy polenta. A variety of sangrias, margaritas, and well-mixed specialty cocktails kick off the celebration.
