Angel Trumpet

My very favorite Florida flower is blooming.  The flower is gorgeous and what makes it even more special is the wonderful fragrance that wafts through the yard in the evening. The actual name of the plant is Brugmansia.  Do you remember the HUGE lily we saw at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden?  I was reminded  of this flower when we saw the lily.

2-Putt tried to get in the picture so you would know the scale of the plant.  (It didn’t work.)  This plant blooms like this several times each year. Below is a “baby” that I started.  This is the first time it has bloomed.  The purple bush in the background is a lorapetalum.

You can tell in this picture that the plant is related to a poinsettia.

Have you heard of Pinterest?  (Vicki has !)  It is an online bulletin board.  Someone “pinned” one of my quilting designs on their board.  That person had this picture – wine corks and bromeliads!  How perfect for your new place.

I think you would have to water these with an eye droper.  But aren’t they cool?

When Life Gives You Lemons…

leave a comment »

Now that summer is taking a bit of a vacation in Florida (I have had the windows open for 2 whole days), Janice sent me a link to a site that had these fabulous looking summer refreshments.  I will have to let you know if I like  the passion fruit liqueur, maybe I could drink that instead of your Rose the next time I visit.

When life gives you lemons…

make Lemon Shake~Up Martinis 🙂

Lemon Shake~Up Martini
1 shot glass of Lemon Vodka
2 shot glasses of Simply Lemonade
the juice from 1/2 of a lemon
2 Tablespoons of sugar
add all ingredients to a large cocktail shaker full of ice and shake away…
run a slice of lemon along the edge of your martini glass and dip into a plate of sugar for a sugar rim strain ice and pour vodka/ lemonade mixture into your martini glass
YUM!

WARNING:  The following recipe includes the most AWESOME liqueur ever invented.
Several OMGs are likely to follow if consumed.

Orange Passion Martini
1 shot glass of Passoa Liqueur
2 shot glasses of Simply Orange Juice
splash of Pineapple Juice
add all ingredients to a large cocktail shaker full of ice and shake away…
strain ice and pour Passoa/ OJ mixture into your martini glass
(garnish with an orange peel if you feel like being fancy)
Make sure you shake A LOT!
A properly shaken summer martini will have a very thin layer of ice crystals floating on top.

I think I would enjoy PR more this season if I was enjoying an orange passion martini while watching.

Eagle is not allowed to look at the mastiff video.  By the way, Bogie is my trash can attacker.

I Love a Parade

leave a comment »

First, you should know that with a little instruction you CAN teach an old dog new tricks, but sometimes you have to explain it to the old dog.  Believe it or not, I tried to crop the pictures I put in the blog yesterday, but couldn’t figure out how to do it because they were phone not camera pictures.  So give me a hint about how to edit my pictures the next time we speak.

Very pretty house.  I think the light is actually centered, but looks distorted because of the angle of the photo.  The hammock is the most beautiful one I’ve seen!

We’ve been enjoying a daily parade of  Sandhill Cranes.  They walk up the street in the morning and down the street in the evening. The parents mate for life.

The birds are over 6 feet tall, its hard to tell that in these pictures.  (Picture them as tall as Mike.)

L.A. In Bloom

leave a comment »

I recently ran across a blog called L.A. In Bloom that’s pretty neat.  Heather Taylor is the blogger . . . and she lives in LA, obviously, and has created little webisodes for some of her posts (it will be YEARS before I will be that creative!).

One of the webisodes (I can’t paste them into this post for the life of me!) is making a date shake (with almond milk!) that looks AAAmazing.  She also makes homemade chips, guac (Kim – for you :)) and “farmers market margaritas” which only have agave, two pieces of any fruit (she used grapefruit from her backyard), juice of one lime and tequila.

She was also recently featured in a magazine called Sunset.  There were a few pictures of her house (that I want SO badly!).  It looks like such a cute little beachy/LAish/bohemian cottage.

This dining room is what I would LOVE for our new dining room to look like (except the light is a little off-center and its really bothering me :)). I already have the long dining table with benches.  All I need now is that kick-a$$ light fixture and amazing window treatments (and molding, paint, flowers, credenza . . . I’m focusing on the big stuff first!).  I was picturing having an area rug under the table . . . but now seeing this I may be reconsidering that.

How amazing is this backyard?  Wonder if we can somehow get a hammock hung on our roof deck . . . well that and an orange tree planted. 🙂

She also posted about traveling to Big Sur (now, definitely, on my To Do List). (you can read the post here).

Besides writing about how awesome it is up there (look . . . awesome) . . .

. . . she also made my FAVORITE Giada veggie roasted baked penne recipe!  Makes me want to whip it up this weekend.

Speaking of LA . . . I’m going to be there for less than 24 hours next week (flying out Wed night and coming home on the red eye on Thursday).   (Not this week, Kim, but I have a wedding in VT next weekend so I can’t stay!  😦  Why does that always happen?). Oh the glamorous life of an IR professional!

Coat Time!

leave a comment »

Well, not quiet yet . . . but its been two years since I bought a new coat . . . I think its time to treat myself. Now I just have to find the right one.

I’ve been eyeing these from J Crew. Love the bright colors.

This coat has grown on me . . . I didn’t like the short sleeve/long sleeve style . . . but the more I look at it the more I like it.  Kind of looks extra comfy.  I like it in tan . . .

and grey.

I also saw this on Saksfifthave.com, which is having a 20% friends and family sale right now plus free shipping (took advantage of it and bought a dress for Jon and Wray’s wedding – so don’t sweat getting the black one finished).

And this at Anthro (my darn sweater is STILL NOT ON SALE!) but I think its more for fall.

What do you think?

Dog Mothers Have Eyes in the Back of Their Heads

leave a comment »

Since Eagle only speaks dog, I will translate for you.

“Woof” this means “What hole?  I don’t know what you are talking about.”

Woof- “Even though there are Boston Terrier claw marks in the dirt and it appears that there is dirt on my paws, I have NO idea who dug that hole.”

“Woof”- “See Mom, I’m a little angel (when I am asleep.)”
