Underground Railroad by Mom mom and Pop pop

leave a comment »

This is a beautiful quilt Mom and Dad made and I quilted.  It is called a sampler quilt because it is made of 25 different squares instead of repeating the same square 25 times.  They used fabrics that are reproductions of fabric made during the era of the Underground Railroad.

It is called an Underground Railroad quilt because quilts featuring specific blocks were hung to give directions to  people escaping from slavery.

They did a great job piecing this quilt.

I tried to quilt each block a little differently.

Dad asked for cross hatching on the border.  (That’s what this criss cross design is called.)

Don’t tell anyone…they are giving the quilt to Jackie and Skip (their next door neighbors.)

Nick Adopts a Dog

If I didn’t tell you this is Maryanne’s son, Nick, I doubt you would recognize him.  As you know, he is an Army Ranger.  He returned (safely) from being out of the country.  I know Maryanne is proud of him, but must be so relieved when he is home.  She never knows where he is or how long he will be gone.

What a wonderful weekend you had!  I’m glad you and Mike took some time off from homeowner chores, as you know your Mom thought you needed a break!

Jamestown . . .

leave a comment »

Unfortunately, this Memorial Day may be the first one in nine years that we won’t be spending in Jamestown.  😦  Only because construction on the house isn’t finished yet . . . so we’re unsure if we have a place to sleep.  A lot of our friends have offered their guest rooms, but then we wouldn’t be able to bring Chet . . . which would cause even more planning and headaches.  I really hope it works out because the following two weekends we need to be in NY.

If we do make it to Jamestown this weekend this is my ideal schedule of events.

Saturday morning I would love to be able to bring our new bikes and drive them down to Matt and Morgan’s to meet this little man . . . Mr. Colten Swistak . . . the newest addition to our Jamestown clan (who is already two months old!).  I can’t wait to give him a little kiss on those soft baby cheeks!

That would be followed by a trip to Slice of Heaven . . . where we would pick up some iced coffee and breakfast burritos (and maybe a cinnamon roll . . . I usually can’t help myself when I’m in there! :)) . . .

. . . and then head out to Beavertail to have a picnic breakfast, watch the boats sail by . . . feel the sun on my face . . . hear the waves crash against the rocks . . . breathe in the fresh air.

That would be followed by a ride over to the tennis courts where I would kick Mike’s butt in tennis.  Then a trip back home (to let Chet out) and to go for an afternoon sail into the Newport Harbor with Richard.

The day would be capped off with chocolate martinis and apps at Simpatico with the rest of the Jamestown Clan . . . followed by dinner at Jamestown Fish (it just opened in February, can’t wait to check it out) . . . and dancing at The Narragansett Cafe.

Sunday morning would start off with nine at Jamestown Golf Course . . .

followed by chores around the house . . . and a venture out on the boat with our peeps . . .

Finally ending the day with a stop by Amanda’s Annual Memorial Day BBQ (where Mike proposed to me exactly 4 YEARS AGO NOW!).

Yeah, now I REALLY want to go . . . badly.  We shall see!

A Beautiful Brooklyn Weekend

leave a comment »

This was the first weekend since February that we weren’t traveling, packing, painting or hosting . . . it was great!  The weather was AAAmazing.

Saturday morning we went to Egg for breakfast (Eggs Rothko + a bite of Mike’s candied bacon = a very yummy way to start off the weekend!).  Then went to Home Depot . . . followed by a stop at the bike shop where we picked up these beauties.

Yes . . . I got a BRIGHT RED bike . . . takes a little getting used to but I love it.

Then road our bikes over to The Googa Mooga festival in Prospect Park. It’s a music and food festival . . . and was the first year for it . . . so it was a little unorganized but we had a blast.  We saw one of Mike’s favorite bands perform, The Roots, for the first time (they’re from Philly!).  They had a bike valet so our brand new rides were well taken care of.

We got a great deal on VIP tickets, so got front row access to the concert and all of the famous chefs.  You can’t really tell, but this is Anthony Bourdain talking. The Huffington Post posted this story which says that during his time on stage he admitted that would eat a human and offers instructions for cooking unicorn (there was also unlimited booze and hardly any food in the VIP area so needless to say people got a little sloppy)!

Sunday I made more of my newest obsession, Gruyère and Carmelized Onion Scones, and brought them up to West Haven, CT where we met up with Mike’s cousin that lives in Texas (Kara) and her son (Dillon) (and Ellen and Lauren) for a picnic near the beach.

The weekend was capped off with grilled asparagus and portabellas for dinner and a viewing of the last two episodes of Modern Family.  Hope you had a nice weekend!

Eagle has figured out that he is closer to the squirrel when he is on the top of my compost tumbler.  He is also preparing for the log-rolling event in the Doggy Olympics.

He followed this up with a dip in the pool.  Before you ask, he and I will not be performing in the synchronized swimming event.
