Katya & Unity’s Wedding: Tulum, Mexico
Perfection. I’ve been trying to find the word to describe the “UniKat” festivities in Mexico this past weekend and that’s the word that keeps coming to mind. We spent the weekend staying at the most perfect resort, enjoying the perfect weather, laughing hysterically or staring open-mouthed with admiration during the friends and family talent show, eating amazing food, hanging out with the most interesting, caring and fun group of people I’ve ever been on vacation with . . . and if that wasn’t enough, watched two of our best friends tie the knot during one of the most romantic ceremonies I’ve ever had the honor of witnessing.
We got into Cancun very late Wednesday night so we just stayed at a hotel near the airport. When we woke up and walked out our little balcony door we saw this . . . electric blue water, palm trees blowing in the breeze. Not bad.
Our room had this awesome tile that matched the ocean.
Then we headed down to Tulum . . .
And checked into Ana y Jose.
This was taken from our little balcony.
Thursday night was the “Friends and Family Talent Show” at an awesome little jungle-like bar down the street.
The acts included a James Bond skit (by Katya’s parents – SO wish I got a picture of it!) . . . a sing along with kazoos (by Unity’s parents and nephew) . . .
. . . they were later joined by Katya’s mom . . .
an Indian dance (so wish these pictures were better 😦 ) . . .
A synchronized dance (Katya and Unity did one from Pulp Fiction but I was video taping at the time . . . not that it matters . . . I’m the WORST picture taker ever 😦 ). . .
A couple of songs . . . including some in Spanish (this is Unity’s sister singing a song she put together for them in Spanish)
A dance by Katya’s grandma and her boyfriend (aaaadorable :)) . . .
Mike’s talent was “doodling” so he sat next to the stage the entire night drawling every act and putting it all into a collage for Unity and Katya . . .
He ended up winning the contest. 🙂
The next day was the “Leisure Man Olympics” . . . where we played hula hoop, water balloon toss, flip cup, three-legged race, tug of war . . . our group won! It was a blast.
Friday night was a beach BBQ . . .
with a pinata . . .
Saturday (wedding day!) we went for a run on the beach . . . had breakfast on the deck . . .
drank coconut water on the beach . . . straight from coconuts . . .
and I practiced my reading for the ceremony.
. . . and then around 4pm (which is truly magic hour in Tulum – perfect temp, perfect amount of sun) Mike and I and 100 of Katya and Unity’s closest friends and family gathered together on the beach . . .
to watch them profess their love and commitment to each other. Everyone commented that Katya had this amazing ray of sun on her the whole time, which you can see in this picture. Beautiful.
They sealed the deal with a kiss . . .
And we spent the next few hours celebrating with them and enjoying our last moments of sand in between our toes, margaritas in our hands, palm trees swaying the breeze . . . all under an incredible full moon.
Perfection. Love these guys and know that they’ll have an amazing life together.
